A client comes into my examination room: »We have already seen some other veterinarian and they have ruined our dog! We spent so much money and came nowhere, actually the condition got even worse. Now we came to you, we want you to cure our dog.« …
Ugh … Probably we all have experienced something like that, no matter if we work at reference clinic or not. And probably we all hate such unfriendly introduction, when a client comes to us for second opinion. Their bad experience creates a mistrust of veterinarians, puts us in uncomfortable position and increases pressure. Personally, I become a bit cautious in a situation like this, asking myself if they are going to talk about me the same way next time somewhere else, if I fail? And it can really be, that some of the colleagues made a mistake, but it can also be about complex internal medicine case and owners simply didn’t give previous veterinarian enough time to get to the right diagnosis. Because we all know: in internal medicine, the correct diagnosis can request quite some time.
The reason, for which they came, is actually not important. Important is, that they are here, and want me to help their dog. It is also important to restore the lost trust in our profession. At this point I am very aware of the fact, that usually people don’t search second opinion for simple cases … And so I wonder if I – as young veterinarian – am capable of solving such case? I work at larger clinic with colleagues, who have 15-20 years of experience more than I do. Aren’t they more suitable for giving second opinion? Probably yes. But if I don’t start now, I may never.
That is why I search for and want to attend courses, that will help me to optimize my knowledge, so that I will be able to more confidently deal with problem solving. Including second opinions. Systematically, without skipping steps, without quick conclusions that we so much like to do, to ease our work. I expect that good courses, in contrast to congresses, process the themes more systematically and consolidate knowledge. Attending the course is also very different from only reading literature, where among plenty of data is sometimes difficult to judge, what is really important in practice. I know, that following this path one can soon be able to confidently stand in front of the clients and say, “Let’s solve this!”
