Pieter graduated at the University of Ghent in 2001. After an rotating Internship and a few years in private practice he started his surgery residency at Dick White Referrals in 2008. Pieter gained his diplomate status in 2012 and has since been working as a soft tissue surgeon. At present he is employed as the head of soft tissue surgery at Tierklinik Haar. He is the author of many publications and book chapters and has presented at multiple national and international conferences.
Abdominal surgery course – part 1
The course is intended for veterinarians with a wide range of skills, including all those eager to learn new skills and improve their current knowledge.

A review of the abdominal anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology will be discussed prior to focusing on specific conditions such as gastrointestinal foreign bodies, gastric dilatation and volvulus, splenic surgery etc.
A review of diagnostics, differential diagnoses, pre-operative stabilisation, intra-operative techniques as well as post-operative care. We will discuss how to recognise and manage common post-operative complications including septic peritonitis.
Practical part – 2 days in depth step by step procedures:
Common intra-abdominal procedures, proper techniques and tissue handling.
Practical on how to avoid common mistakes.
You will practice and learn:
Abdominal wall anatomy
Abdominal wall rupture-hernia
Feeding tubes (NO – O – G- E- Tubes)
Laparotomy without tears
